( French, 1700 - 1782 )
Fishermen at Sunrise; A Storm
Materials:
A pair, both oil on canvas
Size Notes:
Each: 48,7 x 64,7 cm ; 19 1/5 by 25 in.
Edition:
Lacroix mined Vernet's repertoire for the scenes he depicted, as is the case here, where he has juxtaposed a 'Calm', as it was then called that is to say an evening coastal view and a storm. However, Lacroix was more particularly interested in the atmospheric effects of light and water. The way in which he painted both the soft mist rising from the sea and the sun's rays piercing the clouds is typical of his desire to capture the effects of nature with realism and poetry, paving the way for a new approach to landscape painting, in the wake of Vernet.
